How I Got Here

  I have five amazing children. One of them became a heroin addict. Becoming an expert in addiction medicine was not my plan. I spent my career in the ER where people with addictions were derogatorily called "addicts" and "drug seekers". Decades of work in the ER hadn't prepared me for dealing with addiction. However, wanting to help my son, I studied addiction medicine. My son, my training, and several years practicing addiction medicine have taught me how to help the addicted and their loved ones. Now, I hope to help you avoid the dangerous and costly missteps we took.

 As an addiction medicine doctor, I have a front row seat to the disasters of addiction and gratefully the joys of recovery. Most importantly, I've had the opportunity to see firsthand what works. Sadly, what is believed to be and promoted as rehab and recovery, rarely works, and can waste a great deal of time and money. While there is not a silver bullet, there are medicines and methods that are very successful in treating addiction. Just like treating high blood pressure and diabetes: medicate and help change behaviors
